As I stood in the open air of The Gambia, hands steady on the pestle, my rhythm matched the pulse of something ancient. Beside me, Fatima worked with quiet grace—her every movement a tribute to generations of women before her. We were bound by a shared task, yet our lives couldn’t have been more different.
In that moment, I wondered: do we choose our paths, or are we born into them?
Fatima’s world was shaped by tradition, survival, and expectation—forces I knew too well, though mine wore a different face. I had choices. Freedoms. A passport. Dreams. She had roots.
